Information about Mesothelioma Cancer

Mesothelioma is an unusual kind of cancer which grows in the cells of mesothelial tissue. These types of cell are found around the lungs and heart. The main functions of these cells are to protect lungs and stomach. This is done by discharging a fluid which lubricates the organs and helps them to work smoothly. These cells remove the friction caused due to regular working of the organs.

Mesothelioma

Tumors can be developed in the mesothelial cells. These tumors are of two types – Benign and Malignant. Benign tumors are generally harmless in nature as they do not lead to cancer. Malignant tumor leads to cancer and is very harmful. It is also called malignant mesothelioma. It is a very rare kind of disease which is developed in the mesothelial tissue.

Malignant Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma cancer is caused due to the malignant tumor developed in mesothelial cells. In this disease the mesothelial tissues gets infected due to inhalation of dust particles through asbestos fibers. Due to the above mentioned process, the mesothelial cells dry up and the fluid surrounding lungs and other organs stops to work. Hence tumors develop which ultimately leads to cancer.

Mesothelioma Cancer

There are three types of mesothelioma: Firstly, Pleural mesothelioma which is the most common type of mesothelioma and 75% of cases recorded are of this nature. Secondly, peritoneal mesothelioma which is a less common cancer that develops near the lining of the cavity surrounding the abdomen. Lastly, pericardial mesothelioma which takes place in pericardium and covers the lining of the heart. It is primarily a lung cancer.
